Struggling Blackpool have strengthened their defensive ranks with the loan signing of Kamarl Grant from Millwall until the end of the season, as Ian Evatt continues to reshape his squad during a challenging League One campaign.
Grant, who had a loan spell with Gainsborough Trinity while a youngster at Sheffield United, arrives on the Fylde Coast having struggled for regular minutes at The Den this season, but with an impressive recent body of work from his loan spell at Bromley, where he made 40 League Two appearances last term.
The 22-year-old is expected to go straight into contention for Saturday’s trip to Barnsley, with Blackpool keen to add both athleticism and depth at the back following a run of injuries that has stretched their defensive options.
Although he has only featured four times for Millwall this season, the defender is no stranger to senior football, having also gained experience with Gainsborough Trinity and Dagenham and Redbridge earlier in his career. His time at Bromley, in particular, is viewed as a key stage in his development, coinciding with Danny Imray’s spell at Hayes Lane, a link that has helped reassure Blackpool’s recruitment team.
Why Ian Evatt has signed him
Speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire, Blackpool head coach Ian Evatt was clear about what attracted him to Grant and why the move made sense at this point in the season.
“He adds a different style. He’s very athletic, really aggressive in both boxes, defends space really well and I’m delighted we’ve persuaded him to be part of our journey,” Evatt said.
The Blackpool boss also highlighted how Grant’s physical profile fits into his tactical approach, particularly when the Seasiders look to press high and leave space behind the defensive line.
Evatt expanded on that theme by stressing the importance of balance when recruiting at League One level.
“Yes, he can play with the ball, which is important for what we want to do, but if we want to press high in particular, then that means you leave big spaces behind, and he can manage those spaces really well,” he explained.
With Blackpool having been “pulverised by injuries” in recent weeks, Evatt admitted strengthening was essential, adding that the club are trying to build a squad with different options and skillsets, whether through loans or permanent deals.
Blackpool need an upturn in fortunes
Blackpool currently sit 19th in League One, level on 29 points with several sides hovering just above the relegation zone. Despite winning three of their last five matches, recent defeats have stalled momentum, with 37 goals conceded in 25 games highlighting the need for greater defensive solidity.
Grant’s arrival is therefore seen as a timely boost as the Seasiders look to stabilise their form and move up the table, starting with a difficult test at Oakwell this weekend.
