Bolton Wanderers Loan Star Recalled – Replacement Already Lined Up

Chelsea have moved to recall Teddy Sharman-Lowe from his loan spell at Bolton Wanderers, cutting short the goalkeeper’s stay in League One and forcing Wanderers into an urgent search for replacements.

The 22-year-old will return to Chelsea just 24 hours after starting in Bolton’s 1-0 defeat to Port Vale in the Vertu Trophy. The recall follows a difficult festive period for the Whites, during which Sharman-Lowe was dropped on New Year’s Day for the league trip to Doncaster Rovers, a decision that appears to have prompted swift action from his parent club.

Sharman-Lowe arrived at the Toughsheet Community Stadium in the summer as Bolton’s first-choice goalkeeper, having enjoyed an outstanding 2024-25 campaign on loan at Doncaster Rovers. During that spell, he played every league minute as Grant McCann’s side secured the League Two title, producing several decisive moments, including a late penalty save that confirmed promotion. That form made him an attractive option for Bolton as they looked to strengthen between the posts ahead of the current League One campaign.

Mixed Time At Bolton

However, his time at Wanderers has been mixed. While he recorded six clean sheets in 23 appearances across all competitions, a run of high-profile errors over the Christmas period undermined confidence, both in the stands and within the squad. Head coach Steven Schumacher publicly defended his goalkeeper earlier in the season when concerns were raised about shot-stopping numbers, but the decision to leave him out on New Year’s Day proved pivotal.

Bolton’s problems have been compounded by developments elsewhere in the goalkeeping department. American stopper Tyler Miller, who stepped in as first choice for the opening games of the calendar year, has informed the club of his intention to leave with immediate effect, reportedly for family reasons. Wanderers have yet to comment formally on Miller’s situation, but the double blow leaves them suddenly light on senior options.

Nathan Broome remains at the club following his summer arrival on a free transfer from Swansea City, while academy goalkeeper Luke Hutchinson is currently gaining experience on loan at Altrincham in the National League. Youngster Jack Dallimore has travelled with the first team but is still awaiting his senior debut.

Bolton Into The Market

This means Schumacher is looking to complete the permanent signing of Fleetwood Town goalkeeper David Harrington. The 25-year-old is making the step up from League Two after joining Fleetwood from Cork City in 2023, where he has largely operated as a number two but impressed when called upon, including a clean sheet against Port Vale in the FA Cup. Harrington, who was born in Cork and has since switched international allegiance to Wales, sees the move as an opportunity to play at a higher level and re-establish himself in the international picture.

The deal would become Bolton’s second incoming move of the window following Lewis Temple’s arrival, amid a reshaping of the goalkeeping department overseen by Steven Schumacher. Harrington will see this transfer as a genuine chance to claim the number one shirt, with Bolton needing stability between the posts as they look to halt a dip in form and keep their League One play-off push on track ahead of key fixtures against Wigan Athletic and Stevenage.
