Imps Rivals Sack Manager, Former Northampton Town Boss in the Frame

Peterborough United have parted company with Darren Ferguson after a 2-1 defeat to Blackpool left them bottom of League One, with former Northampton Town boss Jon Brady among those tipped to take over.

The decision ends Ferguson’s fourth spell in charge of Posh, during which he delivered four promotions, two Wembley triumphs and back-to-back defeats against Posh, breaking the record for biggest win, and our biggest win at London Road.

Ferguson Era Ends Again

Ferguson, 53, rejoined Peterborough in January 2023 and led the club to a mid-table finish last season. However, only three wins from their opening 13 matches have left Posh five points from safety, prompting chairman Darragh MacAnthony to act. In a statement, he described Ferguson as “the greatest manager in the club’s history” but admitted a reset was needed after a difficult start.

Despite his achievements, including the 2023 EFL Trophy win, Ferguson’s side have been short of consistency and goals, and their current form has left fans concerned about another relegation battle. His departure will resonate around League One, particularly among Lincoln City supporters, given Peterborough’s long-standing rivalry and proximity in the table.

Grant McCann is thought to be readying his CV, but it seems as though, for once, they might appoint someone they haven’t

Brady and Williams Linked

Football League World reports that ex-Swansea City manager Luke Williams and former Northampton boss Jon Brady are both in contention to succeed Ferguson. Williams, who took Notts County to promotion from the National League in 2023 before a brief stint in South Wales, has been out of work since February. Brady, meanwhile, led Northampton to promotion from League Two in 2023 before leaving Sixfields last winter.

Peterborough’s next appointment will be crucial as they attempt to arrest their slide. Just two years removed from Championship football, the club now find itself fighting for survival in the third tier.

In truth, Ferguson has been let down by signings. Posh’s transfer policy has unearthed diamonds in recent seasons, but that hasn’t been the case this season. The likes of Chris Conn-Clark were meant to be the new batch coming through, but it just hasn’t happened.

The signs were there last season. They were heavily reliant on the brilliance of Kwame Poku, and as shown at the Bank in January, they just didn’t have enough quality running through the team outside of the odd headliner. They were outrun and outfought in three matches against the Imps, going back to September last season, reflective of their overall decline.

Once, they were a promotion rival, but in recent seasons, they’ve become mid-table fodder. Whoever replaces Ferguson will be tasked with lifting a side that has lost direction and confidence, and Lincoln supporters will no doubt keep a close eye on how events unfold down the A1.
