Lincoln City’s U18s suffered a frustrating 2-1 defeat at home to Blackpool despite taking the lead and playing much of the match with an extra man.
The young Imps started brightly, but a drop in intensity after the red card allowed the visitors to come from behind and snatch the points.
Strong Start, Missed Opportunity
City were on the front foot from the opening whistle, pressing with intent and looking sharp in possession. That pressure paid off midway through the first half, when Will Cowin showed real composure to finish smartly after seizing on a mistake at the back.
The lead should have given the Imps a platform to build on, and things got even better ten minutes later when Josh Kennealey broke clear. As he bore down on goal, Blackpool keeper Kai Crowe rushed from his box and deliberately handled to stop the chance, leaving the referee with no choice but to show a straight red card.
With a man advantage and a goal to the good, City were in a commanding position, but the visitors responded with spirit. Just before the break, Blackpool levelled through George Elder’s powerful header from a corner.
Late Blow
City struggled to impose themselves after the restart, with Blackpool carrying the greater threat despite their disadvantage. The decisive moment came eight minutes from time when a defensive lapse allowed substitute Zaccai Etuhu to tap into an empty net for the visitors.
The Imps pushed forward late on, but Blackpool defended with determination and held out for the three points.
Head coach Sam Tillen reflected on the positives while admitting frustration that his side did not make the most of their advantage.
“I thought we started quite brightly with a good intensity about us; we found ourselves ahead with a good goal off the back of some good pressing when Will Cowin showed good composure to find the back of the net. Josh looked a threat and his ability to take on players and beat them put us in the fortunate position of being a goal in the lead with the man advantage, but unfortunately we didn’t kick on and capitalise on that.”
Tillen will be demanding a reaction when his side travel to Bolton next weekend.
“There were some positives to take away from the match, but the drop in intensity needs to be changed and we need to make sure we don’t become too passive in games. We know Bolton are a very good side and we will prepare the boys to go into that game and get a positive result.”
The result leaves the Imps tenth from 21 in the Youth Alliance North table, with two wins and two defeats.
