Recent Peterborough United Departure Makes Championship Move

Former Peterborough United goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic has joined Championship side Ipswich Town after leaving Posh by mutual consent last week.

His departure was confirmed on deadline day, with a statement from Peterborough confirming he was set to join an unnamed club.

And over the weekend, that was announced as Ipswich, with Bilokapic linking up with the Tractor Boys U21’s side. He had far from an ideal debut, conceding twice in the opening six minutes against Wolverhampton Wanderers, before they went on to stage a 4-3 comeback victory.

He wasn’t the only goalkeeper to leave on the final day of the winter window, with Will Blackmore also suffering the same fate. Both players had previously been transfer-listed by Peterborough, but their departures were only confirmed this month.

It’s a move that does raise a few eyebrows and leaves Posh a little short in the goalkeeping department. Alongside first-choice goalkeeper Alex Bass, who has played 24 of their 30 League One encounters this season, Peterborough have just one other senior keeper on the books. 20-year-old Bastian Smith has yet to play a first-team game for the club, returning from a loan spell at Wimborne Town last month.

Vicente Reyes also departed the Weston Homes Stadium last month, returning to parent club Norwich City following seven games for Posh. That means that Peterborough have just Bass and Smith on the books, so that could be an area that they choose to strengthen in the summer.

Bilokapic leaves Peterborough after just two senior appearances this campaign. The Australian joined the club from Huddersfield Town in 2023, enjoying a solid debut season, keeping ten clean sheets in 28 third-tier encounters. Just three of those appearances came in 2024 after he conceded 10 times in three successive losses, losing his place in the side.

Last season, the 23-year-old regained his spot in the team in October, but dropped out again almost 12 months ago today. In 18 league matches, he shipped 33 goals. However, Bilokapic did have a bigger part to play in their second successive EFL Trophy victory, making four appearances in the early stages of the competition. But after starting back-to-back defeats at the beginning of the campaign, he has only been seen on the bench twice, including at Lincoln City last month.

Peterborough Look To Upset The Play-Off Race

Dropped points for Bradford City and Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon have further opened the door for a few clubs looking to steal a place in the top six. And perhaps no team will be as confident of doing so as Peterborough, given where they were earlier in the campaign. When former manager Darren Ferguson was sacked at the end of October, Posh were bottom of the third tier.

But following Luke Williams’ appointment, they have risen dramatically to 10th place in the League One standings. The deficit to those two clubs occupying the final Play-Off places stands at eight points, with fellow top six challengers Mansfield Town next up tomorrow evening.

Going into that game off the back of their 6-1 thrashing of Wigan Athletic, who sacked head coach Ryan Lowe following that result, could represent the perfect time to start chasing down the West Yorkshire duo.
