The Best Lincoln City & Rotherham United 5-a-Side Team

ST: Gijs Bos

Put it this way – I wasn’t going to select Chris Maguire here, nor Drewe Broughton, Kevin Kilmore or Bobby Mitchell.

Bos signed from the Dutch League for John Beck in 1996 and set about making himself something of a cult hero. He wasn’t inconspicuous on the field as he stood six feet four and towered above most other players. He was a typical John Beck centre forward, tall and a target for those balls whipped in from ‘danger alley’.

Bos might just have been another centre forward with a less than one in three strike rate, but the two goals he scored will remain long in the memories of City fans. He notched one in the first leg of our magnificent Coca-Cola Cup win against Man City, which meant we took a three-goal advantage to Maine Road.

In the return leg, we expected an onslaught, but as early as the 17th minute, Bos capitalised on a mistake in the Man City defence to give us a precious away goal. He came off at half-time as Man City needed to score four, but instead we kept a clean sheet and set up a tie against Premier League Southampton.

He later scored four in 18 for Rotherham before a return home.
