Steve McClaren
Jamaica
69th FIFA World Ranking
McClaren is in an interesting position, as a former Imp now managing a current Imp on the international scene. I’d be interested to know if that has ever happened before, and may, one day, do an article to find out!
He is in charge of Jamaica, but his resume is impressive: Middlesbrough, England, Twente, VfL Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Newcastle United, and Queens Park Rangers. He was vilified for his Dutch accent when taking over at Twente, and I do wonder how his Creol is.
McClaren’s Imps link is this – he joined on loan for a short spell in 1987. He played in our relegation season, appearing eight times. We lost seven of those matches, scored just three (two in a single game), and he returned to Derby County.
He is currently closing in on a World Cup spot, as his side top their CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Group.
