Gary King progressed through the Lincoln City youth setup and made a handful of first-team appearances during the late 2000s. He was perhaps the only one of Peter Jackson’s crop worthy of mentioning in a top 20, although Owain Warlow was 21st on my list.

A forward with good close control and a strong work ethic, King found chances hard to come by but made the most of his limited opportunities, scoring once in his 12 outings. His goal came against Brentford, offering a glimpse of his attacking instincts, but there just wasn’t enough there for him to break through properly. He bagged three in 11 on loan with Boston, but was released at the end of his contract.

Despite leaving the club relatively early in his career, he went on to play for Accrington Stanley in the EFL, before enjoying a steady run in non-league football, maintaining ties to the local game and representing numerous sides at semi-pro level.

20. Wayne Biggins

8 appearances, 1 goal

Wayne Biggins is a well-known name across the EFL, having played for Stoke City, Manchester City and Norwich. In the early 90s he had a spell with Celtic, and at one stage, commanded a fee of £250,000. He was a stalwart of eighties and nineties football, and he was also a Lincoln City academy product.

He played just eight times for the Imps during his stay, but had scored seven in two years prior for the reserves. He made his debut in March 1981, scoring as we beat Hartlepool 2-0, and was then ever-present until the end of the season.

However, he was given a free transfer after our promotion, emerging at Burnley three years later.
