This season, no fewer than five players have attempted to claim the left wing-back role as their own. Jaden Brown was afforded few opportunities, with Jack Burroughs being favoured by Mark Kennedy and Reeco Hackett preferred by Michael Skubala. Both him and Dylan Duffy are arguably more comfortable further forward and Sean Roughan has excelled at left centre back meaning there could be a desire to add a specialist in this role.

Cheltenham Town’s Will Ferry could be an interesting option. Primarily deployed at wing-back in a back five for the Robins, Ferry is also comfortable as a more traditional left back in a back four. Despite being part of a relegated side, the former Southampton youngster is ranked as the fifth-best left-sided lateral defender in League One according to Wyscout’s Index.

Ferry has been a durable member of Darrell Clarke’s side this season making 38 league starts and 43 appearances in total, missing just three league matches. He demonstrates a well-rounded skillset, clocking in above-average defensive numbers for tackles, defensive duels, interceptions and ball recoveries, as well as putting in the 13th most crosses in the league, attempting the 16th most 1v1 dribbles, 61% of them being successful, which is, once again, well above average.

Despite playing in a struggling team with the fifth-lowest average possession in the league, these numbers suggest the Bury-born defender is a capable League One performer and could be a smart pick-up for The Imps.

Out of contract at Cheltenham this summer and at the age of 23, a move wouldn’t require compensation. Although a new one has been offered by the recently relegated Robins, it can be assumed that a prolonged stay in League One would be an attractive proposition for the defender.

A potential signing that is unlikely to attract many headlines, Ferry could turn out to be a smart acquisition that goes under the radar, especially with no fee required.
