10 Images That Capture Lincoln City In The Late Eighties

Gary Lund looks to turn the ball in at the far post for City. This is how I remember my first games, perched on the wall like the little blond boy. We’d be virtually the same position as well, although I’m not sure this is a game I attended. Malcolm, our historian did – he’s just visible watching on here.

Great use of plywood here, possibly during the demolition of the old St Andrews Stand. Judging by the sponsor, I’d say this is Cardiff, the game we lost 1-0 which I attended.

The Clanford End or Railway End as I remember it. the noise that used to be made from people banging the corrugated metal at the back could be deafening, or at least that is how I recall it as a youngster.

I put these next two on as a sequence. Researching the sponsor, it seems these came from our 0-0 draw wth Hereford in spring 1987. Painfully, it seems Tony Simmons was pulled down for a penalty, but Steve Buckley missed from the spot. If this went in, we wouldn’t have been the first club relegated out of the Football League; Torquay would have gone instead.

  1. I remember watching Tony Simmons play in the Sunday League for Wildlife in later years, he kept picking the ball up in midfield and running straight down the throat of the defence towards the goal, forcing a telling challenge, you could see the extra technical ability he had even in the top division of the Sunday League, which had 9 divisions then.

  2. Cracking article – I loved reading this. My first game at The Bank was May 1991 Vs Torquay – an 11 year old boy..and I was hooked. Seeing these pictures takes me right back! Thank you!
