SW Player of the Month: January

Worst Performance of the Month – Burton (H) 6.31

I think this is a really harsh rating, although it was perhaps the poorest performance of the month. Had we not conceded late, you lot might have been a bit more generous, but we did and that’s a real killer blow. The truth is Burton were organised, they outfought us in the midfield and probably, marginally, deserved their victory. The worst thing about the game for me was their socks; some players looked like they were wearing ankle boots rather than football boots and it kept putting me off. True story.

Remember, this is the best ‘worst’ performance of the month, and in November and December, it would have been the best-rated game of the month!

Previous Lowest:

August: Oxford United (A) 5.02

October: Wimbledon (H) 5.27

November: Portsmouth (H) 4.63

December: Crewe (A) 4.57

Best Performance of the Month – Sunderland (A) 8.25

Lincoln City's Chris Maguire in pole position to win 'S***house of the Year' after celebrating in Sunderland boss Lee Johnson's face as hat-trick sinks former club

I cannot recall a collective score of more than eight for a single game, but rightly so, this game gets 8.25. We might not get to play at the Stadium of Light again anytime soon, but if we don’t, we’ll always remember this result. City were outstanding, from start to finish. Michael Appleton tactically outclassed his counterpart, who was sacked later in the month. We had a wonder goal from Maguire, then the celebration which will live long in the memory, rightly or wrongly. You don’t win 3-1 at Sunderland and not get massive plaudits, and rightly so this is the best performance in your eyes not only of the month, but the whole year. A tenner says that’s the case come May.

Best Individual Performance of the Month – Chris Maguire (Sunderland A) 9.7

Credit Graham Burrell

Mags won a place in FIFA 22’s Team of the Week for this outing, (I think only the second Imp to do so), and rightly so. His hat trick against his former employers hit the headlines around the country, perhaps for the wrong reasons. He was lauded as a sh*thouse, when actually his overall performance deserved a round of applause. His first goal was outstanding, and his third was a delicious chip that was hidden in the deluge of comments about him celebrating in Lee Johnson’s face. He’s been out injured since Cambridge, but if he never kicked a ball for the Imps again, he’d be remembered for this one game.
