The National League Stars Who Could Be on Lincoln City’s Radar

John McAtee – Grimsby Town

Club statement: John McAtee - News - Scunthorpe United

I know a few Cods will be booing me right now, but John McAtee is well worth keeping an eye on. He was the darling of Shrewsbury’s youth setup, and he became a son of Paul Hurst. He followed Hurst from League One into League Two, and then left the Iron for the Cods in the summer, again following Hurst. He’s 22 now, and beginning to fulfil the potential that allegedly once saw Newcastle eyeing a move for him. He’s got six goals and three assists at Blundell Park this season, but it’s his versatility I think could appeal; he can play through the middle, on either flank or even behind the main striker. I’m thinking a good gamble for a possible Anthony Scully successor (in the long term). He was also born in Salford, so will speak the gaffer’s language. Literally.
