Ten Years On: Who Were Our BSP Hopefuls?

Kyle Perry

Here’s an admission – I like Kyle Perry. I can’t help it, I loved that he was in a band and for some reason that’s always stuck. He had bagged 17 for Tamworth the season prior to signing for us, which made me think we’d signed a non-league hotshot. That was reinforced when he put us 2-1 up in the Southport game too.

The trouble was, after his debut goal, he simply never got going. He scored just twice more, both of them coming in a match at his old club Telford. Never made an impact up until Steve Tilson left and was used sparingly as a sub after that by David Holdsworth. Eventually, he was allowed to join Telford on loan, and ludicrously nobody thought to put a clause in the deal to stop him from playing against Lincoln. He scored which meant he scored three of his four goals in games involving the Imps and Telford. He later did a tour of clubs in the Birmingham area,

Gavin McCallum

I very much liked the idea of Gavin McCallum, but then I very much like the idea of the DeLorean from Back to the Future, but in real life, the DeLorean was not great. The same kinda goes for McCallum. When he signed for us he had recently appeared for Canada, scoring against Venezuela, and Hereford had been keen to keep him. He lost some of that credit as part of the rubbish side that got relegated, but I had a sneaky feeling he’d tear up the BSP. Spoiler alert: he didn’t.

He scored three goals in the space of 18 days in October, which earned him a loan move to Barnet, played twice and returned to City before being released. He later turned out for Woking, where Garry Hill told him he wasn’t fit enough, signed him, then transfer listed him because of his attitude. It might surprise you to know he’s still playing – he recently signed for Bognor and is now selling himself as a left-back.
