Stacey West 2021/22 Predictions (Part Two)

2nd Charlton Athletic (5th)

Credit Graham Burrell

Ins – Jayden Stockley, Craig MacGillivray, George Dobson, Akin Famewo, Sean Clare

Out – Chuks Aneke, Ben Amos, Darren Pratley, Andrew Shinnie, Deji Oshilaja, Marcus Maddison, Erhun Oztumer

I watched Charlton take us apart at the end of last season and saw the early signs of a really good side. Nigel Adkins wasn’t an exciting appointment, but he’s experienced enough to take a well-funded club out of League One, no doubt. I don’t buy into Chuks Aneke’s departure being a big loss, I always felt he was overrated, but Jayden Stockley isn’t – he’s a big signing for this level. I really like MacGillivray as a keeper too, he’s one of the best at this level, and I’m sure Sunderland fans will cry in despair when George Dobson starts purring in the midfield. Adkins is onto something with the Addicks, and they’ll reap the rewards come May.

1st Ipswich Town (1st)

Ins – Wes Burns, Lee Evans, Rakeem Harper, Macauley Bonne, Vaclav Hladky, Matt Penney, Joe Pigott, Scott Fraser, George Edmundson, Conor Chaplin

Out – Harry Wright, Gwion Edwards, Oli Hawkins, Jack Lankester, David Cornell, Aaron Drinan, Adam Przybek, Teddy Bishop, Tyreece Simpson, Luke Chambers, Cole Skuse, Freddie Sears, Alan Judge, Stephen Ward, Emyr Huws, Tristan Nydam, James Wilson

Look at who they have signed. Do I really need to go into this any deeper? Bonne aside, those are Championship signings in League One, and if they add Louis Barry it will be utterly ridiculous. Of course, they’re the envy of the other 23 clubs, and there isn’t a manager in the third tier who wouldn’t at least have a go with Paul Cook’s budget. He’s spent big, he’s spent well and anything other than the title is going to be a poor return on their owner’s investment.
