They Played For Both – Imps and Peterborough

Ben Sedgemore

I was actually surprised to see Ben Sedgemore had played for Posh. It means of the 2002/03 play-off final squad, six also appeared for Posh 9Sedge, Futcher, Bailey, Yeo, Gain and Butcher). Ben Sedgemore was well known to Imps fans having played a key part in the Battle of Moss Rose when playing for Macclesfield. He was sent off along with Barry Richardson for a mass brawl that broke out in the April 1998 clash between the two sides.

He joined up with Lincoln as we battled against relegation in early 2001, and he remained as we fought administration. He was one of a handful of players retained by Keith Alexander for the 2002/03 season. Sedgemore ended up playing a crucial role as the Imps achieved a play-off spot against all odds. He was a combative and committed midfielder, not the most skilful but never found wanting desire and application. His programme articles ‘Sedges Sermon’ were always witty and well written as well, and he gained a reputation for being an educated man as well as a key component of the squad.

He was unfortunate that in both seasons under Keith Alexander he failed to feature in any of the play-off games due to injury. His 2002/03 season was ended in a 2-0 defeat at Bury in March, and he played his last game on the final day of the 2003/04 season against Yeovil. Incidentally, his Posh spell came in 1996 between two stays at Mansfield Town.
