Memorable Match

Where else, but Wembley? sure, I could have gone back to our last three trips to Gay Meadow, all of which brought wins, but I can’t ignore the Wembley final which broke Imps’ records. You know the drill by now – we’d never been to Wembley, never won a domestic trophy and were huge underdogs against a Shrewsbury side pushing for promotion to the Championship. We rode our luck at times – Matt Rhead might have been lucky to stay on the field, something I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about. At the time, I had a long conversation with Danny Cowley about how it hadn’t been a foul and how it looked worse in real-time, then on the Undr The Cosh podcast the big man admitted he wanted to leave something in on the keeper. I got mugged off.
Luke Waterfall did handle in the area too, which should have given the favourites a penalty, but these are ifs and buts. The only stat that counts is goals scored, and Elliot Whitehouse ensured himself a place in Imps’ folklore by giving us the lead on 16 minutes. On a wet day in London, City lifted the Checkatrade Trophy, helping put some money in the coffers that allowed investment in the squad that, in turn, led to League One. What a great day to remember.
