At the end of last season, Wigan lost just once in 15 matches to almost escape the clutches of a points deduction. Sadly, for them at least, it was not quite enough and the fiasco around their administration meant they dropped into our division, and lost the bulk of their squad at the same time. They drew 1-1 with Fulham on the final day of the season, but no fewer than eight of the eleven that started that day have moved on.
That has to be cause for concern; had they kept some of the squad together then I might have fancied them for a swift return, but without a manager right now they’re drifting rudderless and aimless towards League Two. They do have some quality left, Joe Garner springs to mind, but it isn’t going to be enough for a promotion charge in a division as tough as this. If they’re not careful, they are in danger of being this season’s Bolton.
Their summer business has been weak, but there’s no surprise given their perilous financial situation. I can’t see anything but misery on the horizon for the Latics this season.
