Honourable Mentions

After making this list I did have a whole load of players I felt I needed to mention, starting with League Two title-winner Shay McCartan. Shay could perhaps have been on the list for the impact he had last year, but I felt him a touch inconsistent at times. Still, his goals were often spectacular, he scored some important ones (6,500th v Crawley and the promotion-winner) and he certainly would be in a top ten.
A couple of Chris Sutton’s short-term loans warrant a mention too. Chris Herd was excellent for us and Sergio Torres, who came in just as Sutton did, was another big loan player. Nathan Baker had a decent impact and went on to much better things and I personally always liked Matt Saunders. He came in from Fulham and had some quality on the ball, even if it was in a forgettable season. Sutton signed so many on loan though it was often hard to track which were good and which were not.
Trevor Carson had a bearing on our season in 2010/11 as well; he was a solid keeper who I feel could have kept us up, if he’d stayed with the club.
From our non-league days, Charlee Adams and Nick Townsend are two that stand out, both earning the fan’s respect during difficult times with the club. Adams bagged a couple of wonder-goals, whilst Townsend replaced Paul Farman for a short while and had two loan stints with us. Neither were able to single-handedly change our course, but both impressed in their own way.

How could I go through a list without talking about last season’s loan players some more. Danny Rowe was incredibly impressive over two spells, if not perhaps a little inconsistent at times. He had the skill to be a top player at this level, but injury blighted his first spell and he still didn’t quite reach the heights his ability hinted at the second time out. Mark O’Hara had a good spell with us too.
Nicky Eaden came in and did well under Schofield, but perhaps not enough to stand out. I rated James Dudgeon too, a tough centre back from the turn of the century who never really made it in the professional game.
I’m sure you can add some of your own in the comments section below!
He could have saved us from going down, if he had scored from the penalty spot at Barnet, after we came back from 3-0, to 3-2.
