League One Round-up: Ex-Imp set for Sunderland, Southend suffer huge blow

Doncaster take Premier League youngster on trial

Doncaster Rovers have taken Kian Flanagan on trial from Crystal Palace, with a view to adding him to their ranks on loan in January according to the Star.

Moore was interested in the 20-year-old over the summer, but couldn’t get a deal done. That led to a spell with Rovers earlier this month, with the intention being to have a closer look at the midfielder.

“We took the opportunity to look at Kian because he was a player we had identified in the loan window,” Moore said. “Because it didn’t work, we looked at him again as a possibility going forward. It gave us the opportunity to bring him in ourselves and obviously Palace agreed that it would be good for the boy to come in.“

He bagged 10 goals in 27 appearances for his Palace’s development squad last season and is ripe for a spell in senior football. He’s now back with Palace, Moore confirming that former Leicester City striker Harrison Myring is the only player currently on trial with Rovers.

Coventry boss addresses misfiring striker situation

Coventry City boss Mark Robins has admitted his strikers are in dire need of a goal after another blank afternoon.

They were beaten 1-0 by Tranmere on Sunday, a ‘smash and grab’ raid after the Sky Blues dominated. Striker Jordy Hiwula and Matt Godden could both have had a hatful, but instead Coventry slipped to their second defeat in a row. Robins has admitted his side are low on confidence in front of goal.

“What’s happening with them is they are in need of a goal,” he told Coventry Live. “They are putting themselves under pressure of needing a goal. That’s what we’ll be focusing on, and taking it away from them because all last week they were hitting the net all the time.”

He doesn’t feel the problem is a serious one though, deducing that if they keep getting chances, they will score goals. That sounds a bit like a manager we used to have…

“Don’t get too concerned because ultimately they’re getting quite a few chances in the game,” added the former Scunthorpe boss. “I think Matty had quite a few and he is just forcing and snatching at one or two things. But he looked lively at times.

Oxford take former Bolton man on trial

It’s all about the trials isn’t it? I used to tell people I’d had trials but I didn’t; it was just a court appearance for non-payment of a speeding fine. Got £395 added on for that in 1997. Harsh.

Anyways…… 30-year-old Jem Karacan, a former Millwall and Bolton midfielder, has joined Oxford United on trial with a view to a move. He’s most recently been playing in the A-League for Central Coast Mariners, but has plenty of experience in England.

The Turk began his career at Reading, spending time on loan at AFC Bournemouth and Millwall before a move to his homeland, playing for Galatasaray and Bursaspor (on loan). He then returned to England with Bolton Wanderers before heading back to Milwall. The Den is so welcoming, he went there twice.

He only played a handful of times for them before heading Down Under and in 2012 he made one appearance for Turkey’s ‘B’ team, appearing as they beat Estonia 5-0. He was tipped to be a senior international, receiving a call up for one of their World Cup 2014 qualifying games, but he never appeared.
