Thanks, no thanks – Southend United

Thanks – Alex Woodyard

Ah, Alex Woodyard. One of my favourite players from the National League winning side, a truly ‘all action’ midfielder who has since settled in nicely at Peterborough. He’ll be one who surely gets a round of applause when we meet Posh later this season.

He served us diligently and I know he ultimately left for a bigger club, or at least a club at a higher level at the time, but that shouldn’t taint his legacy. He was a key motivator behind our promotion in 2017 and he was a significant influence as we won the EFL Trophy. The money generated by his sale helped bring John Akinde to the club, another key part of our rise to League One.

How odd then, given that two of the ‘no thanks’ are for figures from our relegation, that we should finish on a big thank you for one of the key men behind our rebirth. Woodyard went to Southend as a 16-year-old from Charlton and spent three years there before being released and moving to Dartford, then Concord Rangers.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Cheers Southend, and specifically Phil Brown, for letting him go. Oddly, Phil was also behind the thank you for Theo Robinson as well. Nice one ya big perma-tanned dinosaur.

  1. Small criticism: I’m not sure that making jibes about well-written pieces and then proceeding to litter your own piece with spelling, grammatical and formatting errors is the wisest move…

    • I appreciate the feedback; the joke was actually at my own expense as I appreciate that I make the odd formatting & proofreading error.

I’d argue the piece isn’t ‘littered’ with errors, but do accept my apologies for those that are there.

I am a freelance writer who produces upwards of 15 / 20 articles per day for which I get paid. This is my ‘labour of love’ and often I’m squeezing content creation in late in the day. Sadly, as a consequence, I do make the odd error.

I hope you still enjoy the site.
