Thanks, no thanks – Southend United

No Thanks – Scott Spencer

I could have gone on all night with this. Thanks to Tilson we got a plethora of crap players who had formerly been with Southend; Jean-Francois Christophe, Francis Laurent and Peter Gilbert all spring to mind. However, the one that really stands out for me in Scott ‘Screech from Saved by the Bell’ Spencer.

Scott Spencer was signed Steve Tilson after being released by the Shrimpers, which should tell you everything you need to know about his time at Lincoln. Despite coming through the ranks at Everton there was no indication that Spencer had what it took to score goals for Lincoln, and even when a chance was gift-wrapped and placed at his feet just a few yards from goal against his old team, he still failed to capitalise. He was released as we slipped out of the Football League.

He managed to score a goal on his return to Sincil Bank with Hyde Utd although he ended up losing that game 3-2. He later found his level with the side from the north west and averaged a goal every two games before joining Stockport County.

Scott has found his time at Lincoln led to his career being tainted a little. He was handed a three-month suspension in February of 2016 for failing to report ‘an approach by a third party related to seeking to influence the outcome or conduct of a match or competition’, in relation to the conviction of former Imps Delroy Facey and Moses Swaibu.

It is important to note Spencer was not involved in any attempt to fix matches and did not accept monies or gifts in order to do so.

Doesn’t make him a decent player for us though.

  1. Small criticism: I’m not sure that making jibes about well-written pieces and then proceeding to litter your own piece with spelling, grammatical and formatting errors is the wisest move…

    • I appreciate the feedback; the joke was actually at my own expense as I appreciate that I make the odd formatting & proofreading error.

I’d argue the piece isn’t ‘littered’ with errors, but do accept my apologies for those that are there.

I am a freelance writer who produces upwards of 15 / 20 articles per day for which I get paid. This is my ‘labour of love’ and often I’m squeezing content creation in late in the day. Sadly, as a consequence, I do make the odd error.

I hope you still enjoy the site.
