Five Colin Murphy era players who could have thrived in Danny Cowley’s system

Gordon Hobson

We might not be able to pick many of the slick side from the early eighties, but one player who would fit effortlessly into the current squad is Gordon Hobson.

He returned shortly after we won the GMVC, leaving top-flight side Southampton for a three-season stint back at the Bank. He was a hero of my Dad’s and my Granddad’s and I remember the excitement when they told me a player from my Panini sticker album was joining us again. They weren’t wrong to be excited.

For those who don’t know. Hobson was predominately a winger, great on the ball but able to play inside as well. he could score goals, create goals and when he was playing, we looked an infinitely better side. This is a player who had played First Division football, dropping into the Fourth Division. At the time, it was a coup of Jason Shackell proportions, which is one of the reasons he’d be a great fit today.

The main reason here is ability and position. Gordon Hobson was class, a true Lincoln legend and someone you’ll find plenty of supporters ready to enthuse about had they been following back in the eighties. He’d fit nicely in the wide area currently occupied by Bruno and Harry, able to cut in from one flank and go outside on the other.

Danny would like him because he has that bit of quality from a higher division too. We’ve seen it put to good use with Eards, Bozzy and of course, Jason Shackell. That’s why Gordon Hobson would be one Murph-era player who would thrive in our current set up.
