No Thanks – Delroy Facey
Bit harsh this one, but the list of players who have appeared for both since the early 90s is fairly short. Still, Mr Facey did have a stint with them before darkening our doorstep, if they’d kept him maybe we wouldn’t have had him listed as a former player of ours.
It might be a little controversial, but as a player I thought he served us relatively well. His intended use was as a bustling centre forward, strong and robust and in truth, he brought that in abundance. He came in on loan from Notts County, scoring once in nine starts as Chris Sutton constantly tinkered with the line up. He later returned to us permanently, when he formed a strong partnership with loan player Ashley Grimes. Between the two of them, they looked to have fired us to league safety. Unfortunately, Facey got injured in the 1-1 draw with Macclesfield and Grimes didn’t score again as we went down.
The real issue with Delroy was his attempts at match fixing after he left, in conjunction with another former Imps, Moses Swaibu. It linked our club’s good name with an unseemly side of the game and raised questions in some quarters about the manner of our own relegation.
He only had a short stint at Oldham, joining in March 2005 after spells at Hull City and Huddersfield. He bagged five goals in six outings for the Tigers before his Huddersfield loan deal, then played six times for the Latics. The following season he was still at Boundary Park, but four more goalless games ended his spell. He played at Elland Road as they got beat by Leeds in the Carling Cup before a move to Tranmere, where he scored nine times including five in five matches.
