Three of the biggest losers from the Imps early season form

It genuinely breaks my heart to see a team sheet with Matt Green on the bench. If football was played with 12 players he’d be included, but sadly it isn’t and at present he’s spending some time imparting his wisdom on the management team from the side lines.

I think Matt Green is one of our best players. He’s lively, agile and full of running and he’ll always offer a fresh dimension from the bench. Given his start to the season, three goals in three games, I thought him and Big John would be guaranteed a start. However, in the 4-4-1-1 that we play, no matter what Danny says about formations not mattering, the man behind Akinde is always going to be a deeper lying player looking to pick up a knock-down and get the ball out wide.

If we’re flicking on beyond Akinde, the wingers are expected to do the running, with Bruno Andrade eager to get inside as well as on the flank. It works, but it does mean that a central player who runs the channels is surplus to requirements. For now.

it won’t be the case forever. If we start getting Saturday / Tuesday Green will play and he’ll appear in the EFL trophy no doubt as well. He’s got a big role to play at Sincil Bank and he’s still one of my favourite Imps’ players. It is just time to show excellent attitude and patience.
