Macclesfield Town,
No League Cup games here I’m afraid, just a mix of clashes from the non league to play off semi finals.
We did beat them in the FA Cup of 1969, Peter Kearns and Dave Smith adding to Lewis Thom goals to earn us a 3-1 win.
In total we’ve beaten them 21 times, they’ve beaten us just nine.
Mansfield Town
Even though Evans has gone, I still find something utterly distasteful about this lot.
We lost 4-3 in the 1987/88 FA Cup, a brave result after giving them a right scare. Our last league Cup encounter came in 1977/78, John Ward with the only goal over two legs to set up a clash with Bolton.
We lost that 1-0.
Middlesbrough
No League Cup form, we’ve met 23 times, 22 of which have been league encounters. The last time our paths crossed was 1961, we won 5-2.
Our only cup clash came in the 1920 FA Cup. we lost 4-1.
Newcastle United
We quite famously beat them before playing Derby in 1967/68, Jimmy Grummett and Roger Holmes earning us a tremendous 2-1 win. That was the last competitive clash between us, although we were hosts for Alan Shearer’s debut in 1996.
We’ve only met 11 times, they’ve won seven.

Nottingham Forest
Our last clashes were in the FA Cup, we drew 1-1 at the Bank not long after Peter Jackson took over, only to lose 3-1 at the City Ground.
We lost in the 1946 FA Cup too, but haven’t crossed paths in the League Cup.
Preston North End
David Beckham once lined up for Preston against Lincoln, but not in the League Cup. We’ve never faced them in this competition, but we have met in the FA Cup, the last bein 1977/78 where we lost 3-2.
Clive Wigginton and Alan Harding scored for us.
Rochdale
After such a long time in the basement division, it is hard to imagine a Rochdale side being established in League One.
We’ve never played them in the League Cup, but we have met 112 times, winning 42 and losing 38.
Rotherham
We met the Millers last season, a brave 2-1 victory giving us indications we were in for a decent season. They were too, they earned promotion.
We played them in 1974/75 too, drawing over two legs and meeting a third time to decide the game. We lost that match 2-1.
Stoke City
There’s no doubt Rheady would love to try himself out against his home town side, the same team we beat 2-1 at the Bank in 1975/76. They had Peter Shilton in goal and the wall behind the goal famously came down in an iconic night of football at the Bank.
That is our only League Cup meeting, we lost twice to them during our one third-tier season at the end of the last century.
Walsall
No League Cup games to speak of, the last time we played was in the FA Cup in 2012/13. We won a replay 3-2 at their place but lost the second round tie to Mansfield that could have set up a tie with Liverpool.

West Brom
Again, not a side we’ve played in this competition, but our last three games against them have all been FA Cup. We lost 1-0 in 1949 and 3-2 in 1976.
In 1960/61 14,957 fans watched Andy Graver, Bert Linnecor and John McClelland give us a 3-1 win over the Bagies.
Wolves
We lost 3-0 on aggregate in the 1989/90 cup, the last time we faced Wolves. In 1986/87 Kevin Kilmore and Bobby Mitchell gave us a 2-1 home leg win, with just 2396 turning up at Molineux for the second leg which we lost 1-0.
That set up a tie with Steve Thompson’s Charlton, which we lost 4-1 over two legs.
Sunderland
Just one win in this competition for us against Sunderland, Derek Trevis and big Percy Freeman securing a surprise 2-1 victory in 1970.
Our last meeting was in the FA Cup in 1999, Gavin McCann scoring in front of 10,000 at the Bank.
Sheffield Wednesday
We’ve seen the Owls this pre-season, but we’ve not met them competitively since 1980 when they beat us 3-0 in the FA Cup.
We’ve never played them in the League Cup, we’ve only met fifteen times with us winning just twice.
In 1977/78 we won 3-1 at the Bank, Mick Harford, Clive Wigginton and Alan Jones with the goals
