Seven Questions – We speak to a Grimsby fan ahead of the derby

4. Which player would you mark out as the real danger man for City to keep an eye on this weekend?

Danny Collins is a cool calm finisher as we all saw in the first game of the season but John Welsh might actually decapitate a few Lincoln players if they get out of line. He’s a kid playing FIFA but with only the square button to tackle (work out that reference granddad) he is already on the way to becoming a loved player and his commitment, experience and leadership is something that has been missing since Disley left.

5. What are your honest perceptions of the Imps, as a club as well as on the field?

I am slightly biased as I lived on Ripon Street in my Uni days and worked in the city too I was lucky enough to work with two of the nicest men I have known who are Lincoln through and through. We have lost touch but to think they are having the time of their lives right now makes every one of those Facebook shit posts and banners slightly more bearable.

As for the club I am incredibly envious in how Lincoln has turned it around, the crowds alone are something to be exceptionally proud of. On the pitch I always thought if Hurst had left the club earlier I would suspect the Cowleys might have ended up at the better end of the A46 but it wasn’t to be. You guys are going up if not this year maybe the next, with a new training ground and a Nando’s how the hell are we meant to compete?

6. Who is your all-time Grimsby Town hero and why?

Alan Pouton. Alan Pouton would single-handedly beat Lincoln and still have the time to make Matt Rhead a cheese sandwich to stop him from elbowing him unconscious. His drive and determination is something I want to bottle and sell. He was one of those players who when they got the ball the whole ground stood up in anticipation. On his day he was unbeatable just ask Palace or Coventry and on his worst day he could still bicycle kick a ball out of his own box at Anfield. I miss him.

7. Finally, what can Lincoln fans expect to see this weekend, in terms of style and approach?

We have become very gifable I believe it’s a new marketing approach. We’ve had the own goal of the year and a goose being chased on a pitch expect something that feels very Soccer AM.

Seriously Jolley will have a plan he will have identified a weakness and want to exploit it. We’ve played some great stuff in the last few weeks, expect us to play it out from the back and try to play not too dissimilar to how England did in the summer. I still expect we’ll lose.

    • Yep, Grimsby spent a fair chunk of time in the second tier whilst Scunny were in the fourth tier. Scunny went up for a single year in the late 90s but Grimsby stayed in what is now the Championship until 2003, then suffered a double relegation. They met in the 2004/5 season, at the end of which Scunthorpe went up and they’ve been at least one division higher than them ever since.
