The Stacey West’s Imps’ Starting XI

RF: Matt Green

There’s going to be few surprises up top and one name that I was never going to omit is Matt Green. I am utterly baffled by people who do not include the mobile front man in their starting XI choices, he was our leading scorer last season and perfectly complements our record signing, John Akinde.

If Matt Green is fit, he has to play in my opinion. He’s much like Raheem Sterling for England, people just don’t appreciate everything he does, especially not in some games such as the Checkatrade Trophy final. He stretched the Shrewsbury defence all over in that game, but didn’t get the break himself. Still, the lack of touches led to criticism that I found astounding.

This is simple: you pay £150,000 for a player, he plays regardless.

He will bring others into play, he’ll win challenges and headers and best of all, he’s a cold-hearted killer in front of goal.

LF: Shay McCartan

I’ve got McCartan on the left side of a three-man attack, but he could easily drop in behind the front two and look to pull the strings. I’m sold on the idea of playing three up front, especially if they’re three as effective as we have and with them all on the pitch, the goals will come.

Some might not be convinced as yet that McCartan is the one, or maybe they’ll feel he should partner Akinde, but if you want to be promoted you need goals and with these three on the field, as well as Andrade, we’ll score a bucket load.

  1. If you are right with this team selection, then I think this will be the first time since our return to the EFL that we will not have any of the National League winning team on the pitch.
